Novak Djokovic lost from two sets up to exit the French Open against teenager Joao Fonseca in an extraordinary upset, which means a new men’s grand slam champion will be crowned in Paris this fortnight.
Following the shock exit of favourite Jannik Sinner and with defending champion Carlos Alcaraz absent due to injury, the 39-year-old Djokovic faced a golden opportunity to win a record 25th grand slam title with his two biggest rivals removed from his path – but fell to a rising star who may have designs on a breakthrough success.
There will also be a new winner in the women’s draw, with defending champion Coco Gauff and four-time Roland-Garros winner Iga Swiatek among those to depart, leaving last year’s runner-up Aryna Sabalenka and a rejuvenated Elina Svitolina , who recently won her biggest title in eight years on the clay in Rome, as leading contenders.
❌ Jannik Sinner (ITA) - second round defeat to Juan Manuel Cerundolo 6-3, 6-2, 5-7, 1-6, 1-6
❌ Novak Djokovic (SRB) - third round defeat to Joao Fonseca 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5.
