Georgia’s Tre Phelps, coach Wes Johnson ejected after home run
Georgia’s Tre Phelps and coach Wes Johnson were ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct after Phelps’ go-ahead homer; Phelps will miss the next game, but Georgia still advanced to super regionals. The win keeps Georgia’s 16-year College World Series drought alive, though the celebration overshadowed the pivotal play.
Georgia’s Tre Phelps hit a go-ahead two-run homer — then got tossed from the game for celebrating. Seconds after crushing the ball in the sixth inning of Sunday’s NCAA regional final against Liberty, the Georgia junior turned round first and pumped his fists toward the visitors’ dugout. Umpires flagged the display as unsportsmanlike, ejecting Phelps before he could finish the play. Head coach Wes Johnson stormed out to argue and was also sent packing, leaving the Bulldogs to finish the 6-1 win without either man in the dugout.
The ejection stunned everyone in Foley Field. Replays show Phelps pumping his arms and yelling as he rounded the bases, seemingly unaware the red card had already been shown. Officials never clarified what he said, but the gesture was enough. Johnson’s furious reaction—shouting at the umpires before walking off—sealed his own departure moments later. By the time Georgia added four more runs in the eighth to seal the win, the Bulldogs were managing without their star slugger and skipper.
Phelps, a first-team All-SEC selection with 19 homers this season, won’t play in the next game because of the ejection. Georgia’s season, however, rolls on: the five-run victory sends the Bulldogs into the super regionals, where they’ll face the winner of the Starkville bracket. The Bulldogs haven’t been to Omaha since 2008, and every extra game keeps their first College World Series appearance in 16 years alive.
The incident overshadows a clutch moment, but the run Phelps sparked carried Georgia past Liberty and into the next round. The team’s momentum matters more than the theatrics, even if the theatrics stole the spotlight.
