Google has begun rolling out Androidโ€™s new sideloading flow, a system that adds extra steps for installing apps from developers who are not registered with Google. The update, announced by Android Community Engagement Manager Mishaal Rahman on the r/Android subreddit, is the first version of what Google calls the โ€œadvanced flow.โ€ It will be introduced gradually, so users may not see the new setting right away. The rollout is part of a broader effort to curb malicious apps that slip through sideloading.

The move follows a March announcement that Android would change how users install thirdโ€‘party apps. The new process adds a 24โ€‘hour waiting period and a mandatory restart before the app can run. Google says the friction is intentional, designed to stop scams that trick people into installing harmful software. The advanced flow is only needed for apps from developers who havenโ€™t registered with Google. Users still see a warning, but they can choose โ€œInstall anyway.โ€ The system also applies to updates, not just fresh installs, and gives a 10โ€‘minute grace period if the flow is temporarily disabled. ADB installation remains exempt, so power users can still sideload without the new steps.

The rollout uses a new Android Developer Verifier service, which can be installed from Google Play. This service may bring the advanced flow into devices sooner than the gradual rollout. Enforcement of developer verification will begin on September 30 in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand, covering apps from Google Play and several local app stores. The policy will expand worldwide and to all app installations by 2027. The changes have met mixed reactions; a March poll found 79% of respondents felt the rules hurt Androidโ€™s openness or were overkill. Commenters on the Reddit post echoed this skepticism, questioning the added friction for users who want more control over their devices.
