Google has announced several new features coming to Google Maps through Ask Maps , including the ability to order food directly from the app, more personalized recommendations powered by your Google data, a live transit widget, and conversational map edits.

The biggest addition is food ordering within Google Maps. This is a feature we previously discovered and reported on last month.

Users will now be able to discover restaurants and dishes along their route and place an order without leaving the app. For example, if youโ€™re heading home from work, you can ask Maps to โ€œorder spicy pad kee mao with seafood for me to pick up on my way home.โ€ Ask Maps will find nearby restaurants along your route that serve the dish youโ€™re looking for, while also taking into account your saved places or dietary preferences. Once you choose a restaurant, the system automatically adds the requested dish to your cart so you can quickly review and complete your order.

Food ordering is rolling out in the US through partners including Square and Toast, with support from Uber Eats coming soon. Google also says itโ€™s working on a Universal Commerce Protocol for food ordering, with DoorDash joining Square, Toast, and Uber Eats as inaugural partners.

Google is also bringing Personal Intelligence to Maps. This lets Ask Maps connect to Gmail, Calendar, and other Google apps to provide recommendations based on your plans and routines. For example, if youโ€™re traveling, you could ask, โ€œGive me ideas on how to spend a few hours near my hotel before my flight tomorrow.โ€ Ask Maps can then use your hotel reservation from Gmail to suggest nearby places to visit and recommend when you should leave for the airport.

Google notes that Gmail integration is turned off by default, giving users full control over whether they want to connect their inbox to Ask Maps. Calendar integration is coming soon. If History is enabled, Ask Maps will also remember previous conversations so you can continue where you left off.

Another new addition is a live Transit widget that keeps users updated about real-time delays and schedule changes for buses, trains, subways, and ferries.
