Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold underwhelms with minimal upgrades, increased weight

Google's latest foldable phone, the Pixel 11 Pro Fold, has arrived, but it seems to have missed the mark compared to its competitors. Released amid a year when Samsung has launched two new flagship foldable devices, the Pixel 11 Pro Fold appears to lack the innovation that defined its predecessors. While Google previously wowed consumers with a unique design and impressive features, this new model feels like a step back rather than a leap forward.

The Pixel 11 Pro Fold features a 6.5-inch exterior display and an 8-inch flexible interior display, maintaining similar dimensions to its predecessor. Although Google has increased the peak brightness by 20 percent to 3,600 nits and claims thinner bezels, the phone's overall heft is still a concern. Weighing in at 239 grams, it remains heavier than Samsung's Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra, which weigh 201 grams and 215 grams, respectively. Additionally, at 10.1mm thick, the Pixel 11 Pro Fold is bulkier than its rivals, which detracts from its portability.

While the phone does offer IP68 dust and water resistance, its durability enhancements come at the cost of weight and thickness reduction that many hoped for. The new glass fiber material is touted as nearly unbreakable, but without independent testing, its practicality remains uncertain. Internally, the device is powered by Google's new Tensor G6 processor, which boasts improved web browsing speeds and better power efficiency. However, the battery capacity has dipped from 5,015mAh to 4,806mAh, raising concerns about longevity despite the phone's charging improvements.

The camera system includes a new 48-megapixel main sensor, enhancing its photographic capabilities alongside existing ultra-wide and telephoto lenses. This upgrade is a positive development for Google, known for its camera quality. However, the overall impression of the Pixel 11 Pro Fold is that it is stagnating in a market where competitors are pushing boundaries. As the foldable market continues to evolve, it remains to be seen whether Google can recapture the innovative spirit that initially set its devices apart.
