Google launches Pixel Watch 5 with blood pressure and insulin tracking

Google has officially unveiled the Pixel Watch 5, introducing a range of new health-tracking features aimed at enticing users to upgrade. The announcement came after a lengthy wait, sparked by an unexpected leak during a scuba diving excursion. The watch will be available for pre-order starting August 12, with a starting price of $399.

While the Pixel Watch 5 shares much of its hardware with the previous model, Google has added significant health capabilities. The watch can now monitor blood pressure trends by passively observing the wearer’s pulse and movements. It will provide a contextualized report each month, offering insights into users’ blood pressure levels. Additionally, the watch can estimate insulin resistance and assess metabolic health, which Google refers to as a "personal efficiency meter." These features aim to provide users with a more comprehensive understanding of their overall health without the need for invasive procedures.

In addition to health features, Google has introduced new watch complications, including customizable options through generative AI. The Pixel Watch 5 is powered by an upgraded Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated chip, enhancing processing speed. It also features double the storage capacity of its predecessor, now offering up to 64GB. A new color option, Canyon, will be available for the 41mm model, along with a special edition designed in collaboration with NBA star Stephen Curry, which will retail for at least $579.
