The team at RIKEN Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research found that fruit flies replace gut cells more often when food is scarce and cells swell with fluid. Their study, published in Cell Reports, suggests the gutโs normal cell turnover isnโt just about nutrientsโitโs about fluid balance. When nutrients drop, gut cells become watery and die faster, triggering stem cells to churn out fresh ones. The effect fades once flies eat again.
The discovery grew from earlier work on how diet shapes gut health. Scientists already knew starvation speeds up gut repair in animals, but they blamed missing calories or protein. This study points to hydration inside cells as the real trigger. The team tracked cell water levels in flies fed normally versus those starved for two days. Water-rich gut cells in starved flies died off quickly, while stem cell activity spiked to replace them. When flies ate again, gut fluid levels stabilized and cell turnover slowed.
What happens next could matter for human health. If human guts work the same way, it might explain why fasting diets sometimes cause gut issues or why dehydration affects digestion. The researchers plan to test the idea in mammals. If confirmed, it could lead to new ways to manage gut disorders by controlling cell hydrationโnot just diet.
