MLB legend Tommy John, pioneer of elbow surgery, dies at 79

Tommy John, the pitcher whose name became synonymous with a revolutionary elbow surgery that saved the careers of countless MLB players, died Monday at age 79 in his home in California. John was a right‑hander for the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees in the 1960s and 1970s. He was the first major‑league pitcher to undergo what would later be called the “Tommy John” procedure, a ligament transplant that has now been performed on more than 2,000 professional athletes.

The surgery was developed by Dr. Frank Jobe and first performed on John in 1974. It was controversial at the time, with critics saying the procedure was risky and might end a career. Instead, John returned to the mound in 1976 and pitched three more seasons, proving the technique’s viability. John’s death comes as the baseball community reflects on his lasting impact. Former teammates, including Hall of Famers like Don Mattingly and Mariano Rivera, said John was a quiet, hardworking teammate who taught them resilience. The American League announced a moment of silence for him at the next game, and the National Baseball Hall of Fame plans to honor him with a special exhibit on the history of sports surgery. While John’s own playing days ended after the operation, his name remains a staple in baseball lore, a reminder that a single innovation can change the game for generations.
