Storing electronics in the garage may seem convenient, but it can lead to serious damage. Moisture and extreme temperatures are detrimental to devices, making garages a risky option for long-term storage. Many garages across the United States lack climate control, which can exacerbate the effects of humidity and temperature fluctuations on electronics.

The garage often serves as a catch-all for unused gadgets like old laptops, game consoles, and spare monitors. However, most garages aren't insulated and can experience significant temperature swings. In certain regions, like the Southwest, hot and dry conditions can accelerate battery aging, while cooler evenings can cause rapid temperature changes that are harmful to electronics. Humidity is another concern, as it can corrode contacts and create condensation inside devices, leading to potential failures.

While not every garage will ruin your gadgets, experts recommend against using them for storage unless the space is climate-controlled. Instead, the safest option is to keep electronics inside the home where conditions are typically more stable. Apple, for instance, advises storing a MacBook in a cool location with its battery charged to 50 percent. Additionally, itโ€™s wise to back up important data and remove disposable batteries before storing devices away.

If a garage is your only option, there are steps to mitigate risks. Store electronics in rigid, sealed weatherproof bins, and use silica desiccant packs to absorb excess moisture. Elevate these bins off concrete floors to avoid dampness and monitor the environment with humidity sensors. If conditions become too extreme, consider moving the equipment indoors. Taking these precautions can help prolong the life of your electronics and prevent them from becoming useless over time.
