Hindu students urge schools to teach swastika difference

Hindu students in Germany are asking schools to teach the difference between the ancient swastika and the Nazi Hakenkreuz after repeated cases of the symbol being misused in classrooms.

The push comes as German teachers struggle to handle rising incidents where students draw or wear the swastika without knowing its dark history. Earlier this year, a teacher in Berlin resigned after a parent complained about a student’s drawing of a swastika in class. In another case, a high school in Hamburg faced backlash when a student wore a swastika pin, unaware of its Nazi associations. Hindu advocacy groups say these incidents reflect a lack of education about religious symbols, not malice.

The issue has gained urgency as Hindu communities in Europe push for greater recognition of their traditions. Baijayanti Roy, a researcher at Goethe University Frankfurt, argues that schools often conflate the swastika—a sacred symbol in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism—with the Hakenkreuz, the twisted Nazi emblem. “The swastika is a symbol of peace, prosperity, and good fortune in Hindu culture,” Roy said. “It’s not about denying history, but about correcting ignorance.” Hindu students have reported being teased or even threatened for wearing symbols like the Om or the lotus, which are unfamiliar to many in the West.

Now, Hindu student groups are calling for mandatory lessons on world religions and their symbols in German schools. The Central Council of Hindus in Germany has drafted guidelines for teachers, including how to explain the swastika’s dual meaning. Education officials in Berlin and Hamburg have started reviewing curricula to address the gap. “This isn’t about politics—it’s about respect,” said one student leader. “If we don’t teach these symbols correctly, we risk more misunderstandings.” The debate highlights a broader challenge: how to honor cultural diversity while confronting the legacies of hate.
