Hunter Biden praised โ€œwoken upโ€ versions of Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) on Tuesday, calling them refreshing for challenging Donald Trump inside his own party. In a promo clip for his upcoming appearance on Tucker Carlsonโ€™s new show, Biden singled out the two House Republicans for publicly breaking ranks with the former president. The former president has dominated the GOP since 2016, making dissent increasingly rare.

The shout-out matters because Greene and Massie have spent years as Trumpโ€™s most visible allies in Congress. Greene still carries a fan base built on far-right conspiracy theories and Trumpโ€™s endorsement. Massie has long embodied the libertarian wing of the party but rarely crossed Trump directly. Their recent criticismโ€”Greene calling Trump a โ€œliabilityโ€ after the 2022 midterms, Massie voting against a resolution honoring Trump on January 6โ€”signals a slow shift away from total fealty. Trumpโ€™s legal troubles and sagging poll numbers have emboldened some Republicans to distance themselves.

Bidenโ€™s video clip aired just days after Trumpโ€™s legal team accused President Biden of orchestrating a โ€œwitch huntโ€ against his son. The president has not publicly weighed in on the Greene-Massie drift, but White House allies see it as a crack in the Trump coalition that could weaken GOP unity ahead of 2024. Public polling shows Trumpโ€™s grip on the base is softer than in 2016, with 40% of Republicans now saying they want another nominee. Greene and Massie are small-bore examples, but they represent the first visible fissures.

What happens next could shape the Republican primary. If more lawmakers follow Greene and Massie, Trumpโ€™s path narrows. If they backtrack under pressure, the party stays unified behind the former president. Greene already faces a Trump-backed primary challenger in 2024, and Massieโ€™s Kentucky seat is next door to Trumpโ€™s favored candidate. Bidenโ€™s clip wonโ€™t break the race, but it signals one more voice trying to widen the fault line.
