A 45โ€‘yearโ€‘old man from Richmond, Virginia, was arrested on Monday after police discovered a handwritten list in his home that marked the exact days he believed his wife should die. The list, found during a search of the coupleโ€™s house, included dates ranging from January 12 to March 3, 2024. Authorities say the man told investigators that the end of his marriage was โ€œtoo much to bearโ€ and that he had been planning to kill his wife for weeks.

The couple had been living separately since midโ€‘2023 after a longโ€‘standing marriage that ended in divorce proceedings. The husband had a prior record of domesticโ€‘violence complaints, including a restraining order issued in 2022. In a statement to the police, he claimed that the divorce settlement was unfair and that he was driven to extreme measures because he felt trapped and powerless. The list is the first concrete evidence linking him to the murder plot.

Law enforcement officials said they are treating the case as a homicide investigation and have charged the suspect with firstโ€‘degree murder. The victimโ€™s family has expressed shock and anger, calling for a swift trial. Prosecutors plan to file additional charges, including possession of a weapon and conspiracy to commit murder. The police are also reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing neighbors for further evidence.

The case has drawn attention to the rise in domesticโ€‘violenceโ€‘related homicides in Virginia. Experts say that men who feel โ€œoverwhelmedโ€ by marital breakdowns may be at higher risk of acting violently if they lack support. The suspectโ€™s arrest is expected to be followed by a court hearing in early May, where he will face a plea hearing. The outcome may influence how Virginiaโ€™s legal system handles similar domesticโ€‘violence cases in the future.
