Psychologist finds Wichita families value stability over career change

A New York psychologist found Wichita families prioritize stability and legacy over career pivots, with 87% valuing these over identity exploration. Census data shows Wichita's lower income but higheโ€ฆ

I was a New York psychologist who thought I understood families. Then I moved to Wichita.

I moved from Manhattan to Wichita a year ago and realized I had spent a decade misunderstanding American families.

For ten years I ran a psychology practice on the Upper West Side, counseling couples and parents who worried about work-life balance, over-scheduled children and identity crises. I assumed the pressures I saw were universalโ€”that everywhere in the U.S., families were racing against the same clock. Wichita taught me I was wrong. In the heartland, success looks different: steady jobs, church on Sundays, front-porch evenings and the expectation that children will eventually take over the family business or farm. The anxieties I treated in New Yorkโ€”fear of missing out on elite opportunitiesโ€”barely register here. Instead, parents worry about keeping health insurance and passing down a tradition.

The shift began on day two, when I tried to schedule an appointment and discovered most local therapists book weeks ahead because theyโ€™re booked solid by families who still believe in long-term commitment. Census data show Wichitaโ€™s median household income is about $55,000โ€”roughly half of Manhattanโ€™sโ€”yet its divorce rate is lower and its high-school graduation rate higher. That contrast forced me to re-read the research. Scholars like Robert Putnam have long argued that community ties and shared ritualsโ€”things New Yorkers outsource to apps and weekends in the Hamptonsโ€”are the real engines of upward mobility. Wichitaโ€™s families live that truth daily. Even the local hospitalโ€™s prenatal classes fill up faster than Manhattanโ€™s prenatal yoga sessions, because grandparents-to-be show up to help, not just to take photos for Instagram.

Last month I published an essay in the Kansas Health Instituteโ€™s magazine comparing 200 case files from New York and Wichita. The New York files brimmed with โ€œidentity explorationโ€ and โ€œcareer pivots,โ€ while Wichitaโ€™s emphasized โ€œstability,โ€ โ€œreliabilityโ€ and โ€œlegacy.โ€ The numbers surprised even me: 87 percent of Wichita parents in my sample said their biggest goal was for their child to stay within 50 miles of home, versus 14 percent of New York parents. Critics say Wichitaโ€™s model stifles ambition, but the data show its children are more likely to own homes by age 30 and less likely to move every two years for a promotion.

What happens next is a controlled experiment. Wichitaโ€™s largest employersโ€”Spirit AeroSystems and Koch Industriesโ€”recently pledged $20 million to expand childcare slots and apprenticeships. If those programs lift even a fraction of families into the middle class without eroding the culture that supports them, cities from Cleveland to Sacramento will copy the playbook. Meanwhile, Iโ€™ve started a monthly โ€œCross-Country Familiesโ€ podcast to compare notes between coastal clinicians and heartland counselors. The goal isnโ€™t to declare one way better, but to make sure psychologistsโ€”and policy makersโ€”stop assuming thereโ€™s only one route to the good life.
