Ikea expands US buyback program to all stores
Ikea expands its US buyback program to all stores, offering credit for used furniture. This move captures the booming secondhand market, driving sales while advancing the companyโs 2030 climate-positโฆ
Ikea has announced it will roll out its buyback program to every store in the United States, allowing customers to return used furniture for credit. The move expands a pilot that began in a handful of cities last year and is aimed at attracting budgetโconscious shoppers and design enthusiasts who want a cheaper, greener way to refresh their homes.
The secondhand market has exploded in recent years. In 2023, U.S. consumers spent $29 billion on preโowned furniture, up 18% from the previous year. Climate concerns and a shift toward circular buying habits are driving the trend. Ikea already sells a small range of refurbished pieces online, but the new program makes the offer available in physical stores, making it easier for people to trade in items they no longer need.
Under the new system, customers can bring any Ikea product back to a store for a credit that can be used on new purchases. The credit is based on the item's condition and market value, with a minimum of 20% of the original price for most items. In pilot cities, the average credit was $75 for a sofa and $45 for a dining table. Ikea said the program will help the company reach its 2030 goal of becoming climate positive by reducing waste and encouraging reuse. Competitors such as Wayfair and Amazon have similar schemes, but Ikeaโs scale and brand trust give it a strong advantage.
If the rollout goes smoothly, Ikea could see a boost in foot traffic and sales, while also strengthening its sustainability credentials. The company plans to monitor returns closely and may adjust credit levels based on demand. For shoppers, the program means a lower entry cost for quality design and a chance to reduce their carbon footprint. The expansion signals that the furniture industry is moving toward a more circular economy, and Ikea is positioning itself at the forefront of that shift.
