L.A. Jazz Festival canceled hours before opening

The inaugural Los Angeles Jazz Festival was scrapped Friday—hours before its opening ceremony—after organizers failed to secure critical last-minute funding, leaving John Legend, Janelle Monáe and dozens of other headliners without a stage.

The city-backed festival was meant to celebrate L.A.’s jazz legacy across venues from the Hollywood Bowl to smaller clubs, but behind the scenes it stumbled on financing. Public and private backers pulled support in the final weeks, citing concerns over budget control and revenue projections. The collapse follows a pattern seen in other fledgling festivals: high-profile bookings and city enthusiasm rarely survive the cash crunch. Organizers had promised a month-long program, but without the $6 million budget they’d counted on, the plug was pulled.

A leaked internal memo shows vendors were notified Thursday night that the event was off. Legend and Monáe—who were set to perform free shows—were informed hours later. Dozens of supporting acts, including rising L.A. jazz artists, now face lost gigs and travel costs. The cancellation leaves the city’s summer music calendar thinner and leaves jazz fans scrambling for alternatives in a city already short on large-scale festivals.

Mayor Karen Bass’s office said it will review what went wrong and whether a scaled-back version could return next year. Jazz advocates warn this sets a worrying precedent: without reliable funding or clear oversight, L.A.’s ambitions to host marquee cultural events could keep falling short. For now, the city’s jazz scene—and the artists who were ready to play—are left counting the cost.
