Thousands of students and unemployed young people clashed with police in Indiaโ€™s Jharkhand state this week after weeks of protests over leaked recruitment exams turned violent. Demonstrators hurled stones at officers in Ranchi, the state capital, and set fire to several vehicles. At least 20 police officers were injured, and dozens of protesters were detained as authorities imposed curfew-like restrictions to contain the unrest.

The anger stems from repeated leaks of state-run exams that decide jobs in Jharkhandโ€™s government departments. These exams are often the only path to stable employment for young people in a state where youth unemployment hovers around 20%, well above the national average. Last month, similar protests in Delhi led to the resignation of Indiaโ€™s education minister after exams for prestigious civil service jobs were also suspected of being compromised. The central government has promised reforms, but students say the response has been too slow and too weak.

Jharkhandโ€™s exams have been hit by leaks multiple times this year, including the recent police constable recruitment test. Videos circulating online show candidates breaking into exam centers and sharing answers on social media. Authorities have arrested over 30 people in connection with the leaks, including some from coaching institutes that allegedly facilitated cheating. Yet protesters argue the arrests are just a distraction from the deeper problem: a broken system that favors the connected and leaves the poor behind.

What happens next could spread. Similar protests have flared in neighboring Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, where leaked exams are also a recurring scandal. The central government has set up a panel to suggest reforms, including digital exams and biometric verification, but students want immediate action. If promises arenโ€™t kept, more unrest is likely. For millions of young Indians, a leaked exam isnโ€™t just a scandalโ€”itโ€™s a dead end to their dreams of a secure future.
