Infrastructure and compute: Enterprises are buying AI compute for speed while flying blind on what it costs

A recent survey of 170 enterprises reveals that two-thirds of organizations have moved their AI infrastructure into production, with 30% running AI workloads at scale. However, as companies prioritize speed and performance, many are neglecting to track the costs associated with this infrastructure. The findings come from a study conducted by VentureBeat Pulse Research, which highlights a significant shift in how enterprises make purchasing decisions regarding AI compute resources.

This shift in focus from cost to performance is largely driven by the increasing pressure on teams to meet production demands. Companies are now placing a greater emphasis on GPU availability and the reliability of their systems rather than the total cost of ownership. Despite this trend, a troubling statistic emerges: fewer than half of the surveyed enterprises can accurately monitor their AI compute expenses. Additionally, many GPUs are reportedly underutilized, running at half capacity or less. This indicates a growing disconnect between the urgency to deploy AI solutions and the financial oversight needed to manage them effectively.

The survey also points to a shift toward specialized cloud solutions for AI workloads, although only a small fraction of organizationsโ€”less than 5%โ€”are currently using these options. This reflects a potential misalignment in investment strategies, as enterprises may be allocating funds toward technologies that they are not yet prepared to fully utilize. As companies rush to deploy AI capabilities, they risk overspending and underestimating their infrastructure needs.

Moving forward, organizations will need to strike a balance between rapid deployment and cost management. Understanding the actual costs of AI compute will be crucial for sustainable growth and effective resource allocation. As the landscape of AI technology continues to evolve, enterprises must develop better tracking mechanisms to ensure they are not only meeting performance goals but also staying within budget. This will ultimately determine their success in harnessing the full potential of AI.
