IonQ announced today that its laserโ€‘based quantum computer has achieved a 2โ€‘qubit gate fidelity of 99.99% on a 256โ€‘qubit system, beating the 99.1% score of Rigetti Computingโ€™s 108โ€‘qubit superconducting machine. The new result puts IonQ ahead in accuracy, a key metric for practical quantum applications. Rigettiโ€™s stock trades on the NASDAQ under RGTI, while IonQ is listed on the NYSE as IONQ.

The two firms use different hardware approaches. Rigetti relies on superconducting qubits, a method that many larger tech companies already use. The qubits are cooled to near absolute zero in a cryogenic chamber, a process that is expensive and slow to scale. IonQ, in contrast, traps individual ions with lasers and magnetic fields. This technique is more accurate because each ion can be addressed precisely, but it also requires longer operation times. The tradeโ€‘off is clear: IonQโ€™s machines are slower but less errorโ€‘prone, while Rigettiโ€™s are faster but still struggle with noise.

Financially, IonQ is in a stronger position. The company has raised more capital and reports higher revenue growth than its smaller rival. Rigettiโ€™s market cap is roughly oneโ€‘tenth of IonQโ€™s, and it has yet to turn a profit. Analysts note that IonQโ€™s superior accuracy could give it a firstโ€‘mover advantage once quantum software catches up. Rigettiโ€™s smaller size may allow it to pivot quickly, but it faces stiff competition from established firms investing heavily in superconducting research. The latest fidelity numbers reinforce the narrative that IonQโ€™s unique laserโ€‘trap technology is a serious contender in the race to build a practical quantum computer.

If IonQ can maintain its accuracy advantage while improving speed, it could attract major corporate customers early on. Rigetti will need to close the fidelity gap or develop a hybrid approach that balances speed and precision. Investors watching the quantum sector will likely keep a close eye on how each company scales its hardware and monetises its technology. The next quarterโ€™s earnings releases will reveal whether IonQโ€™s higher valuation is justified by a technology lead that translates into realโ€‘world applications.
