Iran plans to join the BRICS New Development Bank, according to the country's central bank chief, Abdolnasser Hemmati. This announcement comes as Tehran intensifies its economic alliances amid an ongoing conflict with the U.S. and Israel that has lasted nearly six months. Hemmati made the announcement while in India, where he is preparing for next month's BRICS summit.

The BRICS alliance, initially formed in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, has grown to include several other nations, including Iran, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia. The aim of the New Development Bank is to support infrastructure and sustainable development projects in emerging markets. Iranian state media reported that Hemmati expressed the country's desire to foster monetary cooperation with BRICS member states, indicating a strategic pivot towards the bloc, especially given the severe economic constraints Iran faces due to long-standing international sanctions.

Joining the BRICS bank could provide Iran with access to much-needed financing for vital projects in areas such as transportation, sanitation, and digital infrastructure. The Iranian economy has been under immense pressure from the ongoing conflict, with inflation soaring and the national currency losing value. The U.S. has also threatened to impose hefty tariffs on any country engaging in trade with Iran, further complicating Iran's international business landscape.

As Iran navigates its path toward BRICS membership, it remains uncertain how this shift will affect its trading relationships, particularly with China, which has been its largest trading partner. The implications of joining the New Development Bank could offer Iran some economic relief, but it also risks further escalating tensions with the U.S. as the geopolitical landscape evolves.
