Iran and Oman are close to finalizing a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, but Iran says any resumption of traffic depends on additional conditions and compensation for what it calls violations of a June agreement. The waterway, a critical shipping route for global oil supplies, has faced disruptions linked to regional tensions and sanctions.

Talks between Iran and Oman have intensified in recent weeks, with both sides working to address Tehranโ€™s demands. Iran has framed the issue as a response to what it describes as violations of a previous agreement brokered last June, which aimed to stabilize shipping in the strait. The new demands go further: Iran wants the U.S. to lift its naval blockade of the strait and Iranian ports, and to withdraw all U.S. military forces from the area.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the worldโ€™s most strategically important waterways, through which about 20% of the worldโ€™s oil passes daily. Any prolonged closure or disruption could send global energy prices soaring and strain supply chains. Oman, a neutral mediator in the region, has been facilitating the talks, but its role in resolving the impasse remains uncertain.

International analysts warn that failure to reach a deal could escalate tensions further. Professor Scott Lucas, an expert in international politics at University College Dublin, suggests that Iranโ€™s demands reflect broader regional frustrations with U.S. military presence and sanctions. The outcome of these talks could set the tone for future negotiationsโ€”or for a deeper standoff in one of the worldโ€™s most volatile shipping lanes.
