The United States has recorded its first decline in obesity rates in more than ten years, according to a 2024 study that analysed data from over 16โ€ฏmillion adults. The research, led by epidemiologist Benjamin Rader of Boston Childrenโ€™s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, found that obesity prevalence fell in 2023 for the first time since the early 2000s. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey also reported a slight drop between 2021 and 2023, and newer surveys echo the trend.

The slowdown comes at a time when new weightโ€‘loss drugs are gaining popularity. Prescription rates for GLPโ€‘1 agonistsโ€”Ozempic, Wegovy and Zepboundโ€”have more than quadrupled between 2021 and early 2026. These medicines were originally designed for typeโ€‘2 diabetes, but they mimic a hormone that signals fullness and slows stomach emptying. Many patients taking them lose significant weight, and Rader believes the effect should show up in population data. He cautions that while the drugs clearly help individuals, it is too early to confirm they are the sole cause of the overall decline.

Endocrinologist Peminda Cabandugama, spokesperson for The Obesity Society, says the drop is likely due to several factors. She points to increased use of antiโ€‘obesity medications, postโ€‘pandemic shifts in behaviour, and greater public awareness about weight management. โ€œThese trends are a confluence of many elements,โ€ she says. Rader agrees that lifestyle changes during and after COVIDโ€‘19 may also play a role, but he says more research is needed to determine whether the decline will plateau or continue.

If the trend persists, it could signal a turning point in the longโ€‘standing obesity crisis. However, experts warn that without clear causal evidence, the situation remains uncertain. Future studies will need to track how medication use, diet, exercise and public health policies interact over the next decade. The current data provide a hopeful glimpse, but they also underscore the complexity of tackling obesity at the population level.
