Israeli forces arrest 53 Palestinians in Biddu after settler shooting

Israeli forces arrested at least 53 Palestinians during a dawn raid on the town of Biddu, northwest of Jerusalem, on Monday. The operation was the third incursion into the area after a Palestinian man from the town was suspected of shooting and killing an Israeli settler near the illegal settlement of Halamish on Sunday. The suspect was later wounded, captured at a hospital in Ramallah and taken into custody.

The raid comes amid a surge in violence in the occupied West Bank since Israel’s war in Gaza began in October 2023. Tensions have risen sharply this year, and the Israeli government is facing a national election on 27 October. Analysts say the timing of the operation is linked to a broader security push that aims to deter further attacks and to rally hard‑line voters ahead of the vote.

Biddu’s mayor, Nazmi Mansour, told reporters that troops swept the town, sealing off offices, shops and schools. Several homes were turned into makeshift detention centres where the arrested men are being interrogated. Mansour said residents have been assaulted and threatened, creating a climate of fear. Israeli soldiers also conducted field interrogations in the village, according to Al Jazeera’s Nida Ibrahim, who reported that authorities warned the entire community would pay if anyone staged an attack. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs recorded more than 1,330 settler‑related assaults on Palestinians in the West Bank between January and late July, an average of six a day, the fastest rate in two decades.

The raid underscores the escalating cycle of violence as the election draws near. Human‑rights groups warn that the use of home raids and mass arrests could inflame tensions and provoke further clashes. International observers are watching closely, fearing that the heightened security measures may undermine any prospects for de‑escalation. The detained men are expected to remain in the makeshift centre for several days while investigations continue, and the town of Biddu remains under heavy military presence.
