Israeli forces block activists delivering supplies to Qusra families

Israeli forces blocked a group of activists from reaching Palestinian families in Qusra, a town in the occupied West Bank, on Friday. The activists, both Israeli and foreign, were attempting to deliver essential food and water to three homes that have been surrounded by settlers for nearly a week. The situation escalated as Israeli forces declared the area a closed military zone and summoned reinforcements to prevent the activists from accessing the families.

This incident occurs against a backdrop of increased tensions in Qusra, where settlers have restricted movement and access to basic necessities for the families. Mayor Abdel Azim Wadi reported that earlier in the week, Italian activists who managed to reach the homes were also forced to leave by Israeli forces. As of now, approximately 15 Palestinians, including two children, are confined to the homes without access to water or electricity, according to the United Nations. The UN described the families as “trapped in a state of terror” and unable to meet their basic needs.

Settlers have been actively surrounding the homes, blocking roads with stones and attempting to set up an outpost nearby. On Friday, they attempted to erect a tent, but Israeli forces intervened and removed it. This area has become a focal point for settler violence, with the UN indicating that Qusra experienced more settler attacks than any other community in the occupied West Bank this year.

These developments coincide with Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz's plans to shift responsibility for enforcing civilian law involving settlers from the military to the Israeli police. Political scientist Ibrahim Rabaia expressed skepticism regarding this transition, suggesting that it may not significantly change the dynamics on the ground. He pointed out that the police are under the control of National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who is known for his support of settlers. With settlement expansion already well underway, the situation in Qusra highlights ongoing tensions and the challenges faced by Palestinian communities in the region.
