Israeli opposition politicians are criticizing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for a decline in U.S. support for Israel following the Democratic Party's recent victories in the midterm elections. The Democrats secured majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, a shift that many see as a rebuke to former President Donald Trump and his backing of Netanyahu. This criticism comes in the wake of Israel's own elections, where Netanyahu's coalition lost its parliamentary majority, yet he managed to prevent his main challenger, Gadi Eisenkot, from taking the lead.

The timing of these statements is significant. The U.S. election outcomes reflect growing frustration among voters regarding the relationship between the U.S. and Israel, particularly in the context of their military actions in Gaza and ongoing tensions with Iran. Historically, the U.S. has been Israel's closest ally, providing substantial military aid since the 1970s. However, Netanyahu's overt alignment with Republican interests has alienated many Democrats, leading to calls for a reevaluation of U.S. support.

Yair Lapid, a former Israeli prime minister, expressed that the election results indicate Israel cannot afford to have Netanyahu remain in power. He argued that Netanyahu's leadership endangers Israel's security and jeopardizes its global standing. Lapid emphasized the need for a return to a bipartisan approach, recalling Netanyahu's controversial speech to Congress in 2015, which many believe damaged relations with the Democratic Party. He noted that while the anti-Israel sentiment in Congress has grown, it still represents a minority view.

Eisenkot, who leads the opposition coalition, echoed Lapid's sentiments, promising to revive and strengthen Israel's bipartisan ties with Washington if elected. He stated that under his leadership, Israel would focus on fostering partnerships that promote stability and cooperation in the Middle East, rather than merely seeking an absence of conflict. As the political landscape shifts in both Israel and the U.S., the future of Israeli-American relations hangs in the balance, with implications for regional security and diplomacy.
