John Carpenter releases new graphic novel and album

John Carpenter has done it again — this time with a new graphic novel and album called “Cathedral,” marking his first major multimedia project in nearly a decade. At 75, the horror icon is back with a dark, sprawling story that blends his signature soundscapes with illustrated horror. The project, co-created with writer/director Emma Tammi and artist Dan McDaid, drops on June 18 from Storm King Comics and Sacred Bones Records. It’s Carpenter’s first graphic novel and his first original album since 2016’s *Lost Themes III: Alive After Death*.

Carpenter’s return to storytelling through multiple formats reflects a career-long shift from pure filmmaking into immersive genre art. After decades defining horror with classics like *Halloween*, *The Thing*, and *Escape from New York*, he’s spent recent years reimagining his craft — curating film scores, composing ambient music, and even hosting a horror podcast. “Cathedral” isn’t just nostalgia; it’s a full-circle moment. Carpenter has said it draws on his lifelong fascination with cosmic dread and isolated dread — themes he first explored in *Prince of Darkness* and *In the Mouth of Madness*. The album features 10 instrumental tracks, while the graphic novel adapts a novella Carpenter wrote in the 1990s, about a remote monastery hiding a terrifying secret. The project is also a collaboration with Emma Tammi, known for *Dead Pigs* and *The Empty Man*, who helped bring Carpenter’s decades-old story to life in visual form.

The release is timed for the summer horror season and coincides with Carpenter’s ongoing “John Carpenter’s Horror Hall” vinyl subscription series. He’s also scheduled to appear at San Diego Comic-Con in July to discuss the project. Fans can expect a double vinyl edition of *Cathedral* with new cover art and a deluxe hardcover graphic novel. Critics are already calling it a return to form — especially the track “The Resurrectionist,” which channels the eerie synth work of *Halloween*’s score. Carpenter told *Rolling Stone* the story is partly inspired by real-life religious mysticism and his own night terrors. “Horror isn’t about monsters,” he said. “It’s about what we fear in the dark.”

For Carpenter, “Cathedral” isn’t just a creative comeback — it’s a statement that horror endures, even in an era of franchises and remakes. By merging sound, art, and narrative, he’s proving that the genre can still evolve. The project could open doors for more multimedia horror from established creators, and may even lead to a film adaptation down the line. For now, it’s a rare chance to see a master revisit his own myth — not through another slasher flick, but through something far more haunting: silence, shadows, and the unknown.
