A federal judge in Boston dismissed a lawsuit from the Trump administration on Thursday, which accused Harvard University of neglecting the harassment of Jewish students. U.S. District Judge Richard G. Stearns ruled that the administration did not demonstrate an ongoing violation of federal civil rights laws, noting that the incidents cited in the lawsuit were largely isolated and mostly occurred during the 2023-24 academic year.

The lawsuit emerged in the wake of pro-Palestinian demonstrations following Hamas' attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023. Trump officials alleged that Harvard failed to protect Jewish students from harassment, physical assaults, and other forms of intimidation during this unrest. They sought to recover billions of dollars in federal research grants awarded to Harvard, arguing that the university's actions violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on race or national origin.

Harvard has denied the allegations, emphasizing its commitment to the safety and well-being of its Jewish and Israeli community. Harvard President Alan M. Garber mentioned the formation of a task force aimed at combating antisemitism and highlighted reforms in university discipline policies. The university did not comment on the judge's decision immediately.

The lawsuit is part of a broader conflict between Harvard and the Trump administration, which has pursued various actions against the university since Trump returned to office. These actions include attempts to cut research funding and limit enrollment for foreign students and U.S. military members. Despite the tensions, some negotiations have occurred, indicating that both sides may still seek a resolution.
