U.S. negotiator Jared Kushner met with Hamas chief Khalil al-Hayya in Egypt on Sunday as part of a renewed diplomatic effort to advance a stalled Gaza ceasefire plan. This meeting comes just ahead of Kushnerโ€™s scheduled talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday, marking a significant moment in ongoing negotiations over peace in the region.

The discussions focus on a new 15-point, U.S.-backed roadmap aimed at achieving disarmament of Hamas in Gaza and facilitating Israel's withdrawal from the territory, which has been severely impacted by conflict. With around 2 million people in Gaza affected, the urgency for reconstruction and a lasting peace is palpable. The previous ceasefire, brokered by Kushner and other envoys, has stalled primarily due to disagreements over the disarmament of Hamas.

Regional tensions have escalated as several countries, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, condemned Israel's rejection of the proposed roadmap. They assert that Israel is impeding peace efforts and called on the U.S. and the Board of Peace to take immediate action to ensure the planโ€™s implementation. This criticism highlights the international pressure surrounding the negotiations and the broader implications for stability in the region.

Kushnerโ€™s meeting with Hamas aimed to secure the groupโ€™s commitment to the roadmap, particularly concerning disarmament, before engaging with Netanyahu. A Hamas representative indicated that the group is prepared to enter a 14-day negotiation period to establish a timetable for implementing the plan. The outcome of these talks could have significant consequences for the future of Gaza and the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
