NASA is inviting students and teachers to dive into the new school year with hands-on science and space exploration programs. Starting this month, classrooms across the U.S. can sign up for live missions, virtual field trips, and open-source data challenges that let students analyze real Mars rover images or track satellite orbits. NASAโs push comes as Artemis II prepares for a crewed lunar flyby in 2025 and Mars Sample Return edges closer to launch, creating urgent demand for the next generation of engineers, scientists, and coders.
The agencyโs outreach is expanding because todayโs students will be the ones landing on the Moon again and the first to set foot on Mars. NASA has struggled with workforce gaps in key technical fields, and studies show that early exposure to space science boosts STEM persistence through college. In 2023, nearly 3 million K-12 students already participated in NASAโs free programs, from building model rockets to running climate sensors on school rooftops. Budget increases for education and new partnerships with school districts have made the tools easier to access than ever.
This fall, NASA is rolling out a redesigned website, NASA STEM+, that organizes every activity by grade level and subject. The agency is also sending staff to 20 major teacher conferences and will livestream the Artemis II rollout from Kennedy Space Center so classrooms worldwide can watch the rocket move to the pad. Students can join the โMission to Mars Student Challengeโ starting September 5, where teams design habitats for the first human crew and submit their plans for feedback from NASA engineers.
