LIV Golf secures lead investor for player-driven league post-Saudi exit

LIV Golf has secured a lead investor to ensure its future as a player-driven league, CEO Scott O’Neil announced on Wednesday. The unnamed investor's agreement has been approved by the LIV Golf board and is expected to finalize in September. This move follows the recent announcement that Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) will cease funding the league by the end of 2026, after investing approximately $5 billion since LIV's inception in 2022.

The league has faced significant challenges in recent months, including the cancellation of its New Orleans event in June and the reported scrapping of its season-ending team championship scheduled for this month. LIV Golf's financial stability has been questioned, with some reports suggesting it might consider filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The search for new investments, estimated between $250 million and $350 million, has become critical as the league looks to transition to a model that empowers players by making them the majority equity holders.

O’Neil expressed optimism about the shift to a player-centric approach, stating it could create long-term stability and growth for the league. He noted interest from over a dozen potential minority investors, which could help diversify funding sources. LIV Golf aims to hold ten events in the upcoming season, five internationally and five in the U.S., including a tournament this weekend at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey.
