Nothing kickstarts your day like a quick brainteaser – so why not punch up your pop knowledge at the same time by incorporating a music quiz into your routine? Here are seven of the best available on your smartphone or desktop.
After you’ve selected your three favourite genres and your favourite decade – hello, ’90s! – this app blasts out a banger and asks to guess either the title or artist. It’s multiple choice and generally quite easy – ‘Iris’ doesn’t really sound like ‘I Will Survive’, for example – but addictive at the same time. You have been warned.
This app challenges you to guess the banger first by playing the drum beat, then the bassline, then the keys… and so on, until you get it right. It’s a little harder to master than some similar games, partly because you only get one song a day for free, but it’s a nice reminder that hits don’t live or die with their topline melody.

This desktop game asks you to pick an artist – anyone from Madonna to Motörhead – then challenges you to identify one of their songs from a clip and three multiple choice options. It’s not afraid to chuck in a deep cut or three, so don’t go thinking it’s a doddle – 7/10 is a perfectly respectable score.
Every day, Spotle gives you 10 attempts to guess an artist selected at random. You begin by typing the name of anyone at all – Paramore , say. Then Spotle helps you to get closer to the correct answer by telling you whether Paramore matches today’s artist in terms of genre, gender, country of origin, year of debut and relative popularity. There’s a fair bit of luck involved, but to quote Paramore, “ain’t it fun” having a crack.
What is it? A slightly more educational ‘guess the artist’ game
