Brazil’s presidential runoff on Sunday will decide whether left‑wing President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva or right‑wing challenger Flávio Bolsonaro will lead the country for the next four years, with the final tally expected in a few hours. The vote is effectively a coin‑flip, as polls show the two candidates neck‑and‑neck after a bruising first round that forced a second round for the first time since 1998. Voter turnout is high, and the nation is watching closely as the result will shape Brazil’s political direction until 2026.

The showdown stems from a deepening polarization that began after Lula’s 2022 victory, which ended a seven‑year rule by Jair Bolsonaro, Flávio’s father. Lula’s administration has pursued a progressive agenda, expanding social programs, restoring diplomatic ties, and defending the Amazon against deforestation. Meanwhile, Flávio Bolsonaro, a senator and son of the former president, has campaigned on law‑and‑order promises, tax cuts, and a rollback of environmental regulations. His rise reflects a resurgence of Bolsonaro‑aligned forces that capitalise on discontent over inflation, crime and perceived elite corruption. The runoff is the first test of whether Brazil will continue Lula’s left‑leaning course or swing back to the right.

Early reactions suggest the race is tightening. Exit polls from major networks show a narrow lead for Lula in the northeast and among low‑income voters, while Flávio Bolsonaro is gaining ground in the south, among evangelical groups and business circles. International observers, including the European Union and the United Nations, have warned that a Flávio victory could jeopardise climate commitments and weaken Brazil’s role in regional trade deals. Domestically, labour unions are mobilising supporters for Lula, while right‑wing rallies continue to echo Bolsonaro’s rhetoric of “law and order”.

If Lula wins, his second term will likely focus on consolidating social gains, pushing for a green recovery, and navigating a fragmented Congress. A Flávio victory could usher in a shift toward deregulation, tighter security measures and a more confrontational stance with left‑leaning governments in the region. The final count will be announced by Brazil’s electoral court late Sunday, and both camps have pledged to respect the outcome, though protests are expected regardless of the result. The decision will determine Brazil’s policy path on climate, economy and democracy for the next half‑decade.
