Maher rips Paul for publishing Fauci diaries: ‘Your entire brand is Senator Right to Privacy’

Comedian Bill Maher torched Sen. Rand Paul on Friday for publishing Anthony Fauci’s private diaries and threatening to hold the former White House chief medical adviser in contempt of Congress, calling the Kentucky Republican’s conduct a betrayal of small-government principles.

Maher, host of HBO’s “Real Time,” mocked Paul for what he called a hypocritical obsession with Fauci’s pandemic response after years of opposing government overreach. “Your entire brand is Senator Right to Privacy,” Maher quipped on air. “You’re out here publishing someone’s diary like a creepy stalker and threatening to throw them in jail. That’s not liberty—that’s banana republic stuff.” The comedic broadside came after Paul, a libertarian firebrand, spent months demanding documents related to Fauci’s tenure and accusing the former NIH director of misleading Congress about COVID-19 origins.

The clash caps a years-long feud between Paul and Fauci, fueled by Republicans’ demands for transparency over pandemic policies. Paul, who chairs the Senate Health Committee, has led probes into Fauci’s role in funding research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, arguing U.S. taxpayer dollars may have bankrolled risky gain-of-function studies. In September, Paul released a 10,000-page diary excerpt he claimed showed Fauci lied to Congress about funding. Democrats and Fauci’s allies dismissed the move as political theater, accusing Paul of weaponizing documents to score points ahead of a potential 2024 presidential run.

The spat underscores how the pandemic-era feud over COVID’s origins has hardened into a permanent culture-war battle. Paul’s tactics—diaries, contempt threats, and subpoena blitzes—mirror those used by other Republicans targeting perceived liberal icons, from Hunter Biden’s laptop to the January 6 committee. Maher’s rebuke stings because it targets Paul’s self-styled libertarian brand, exposing the gap between his small-government rhetoric and his aggressive pursuit of Fauci. With the 2024 election looming, expect Paul to double down, turning Fauci into a campaign prop even as fact-checkers undermine his claims. For Maher, the clash is just another symptom of a country where politics trumps principle—and no one, not even self-proclaimed purists, is immune.
