The shocking incident occurred as Thompson, a 50-year-old father of two, was entering a hotel in midtown Manhattan. Mangione's decision to plead guilty comes after he had initially entered a not guilty plea in both federal and state cases. Prosecutors have recommended a sentence of 24 to 30 years in prison, but the presiding Judge Margaret Garnett clarified that she will ultimately determine the sentence, which could reach the maximum of life in prison without parole.

Mangione's guilty plea complicates his pending state case, where he faces eight charges, including second-degree murder. The state trial is set to begin in September.
