Mexico beat the United States 2-0 in the Concacaf U-20 final at Azteca Stadium on Sunday, lifting the regional title on home soil for the second straight tournament.

El Tri’s young squad controlled the game from the start, with defensive midfielder Efraín Álvarez scoring in the 23rd minute after a quick counter. Striker Santiago Castro doubled the lead in the 77th minute, sealing the win in front of a raucous crowd. The victory marks Mexico’s sixth U-20 Concacaf championship since 1996 and their second in a row under coach Raúl Chabrand.

This result continues a rare streak of dominance in youth football for Mexico, who have reached at least the semifinals in every U-20 Concacaf tournament since 2011. The U.S. side, despite fielding several players with college or professional experience, struggled to break down Mexico’s disciplined backline. Goalkeeper Henry Hutchison made a string of fine saves, but Mexico’s midfield kept possession and forced errors under pressure.

The win sends Mexico to the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile as the regional champion. It also reinforces the gap between the two nations’ youth programs, after Mexico’s senior team defeated the U.S. in the 2023 Nations League final. Meanwhile, the U.S. will need to regroup quickly—its U-20 team has now lost two consecutive Concacaf finals, raising questions about development pathways ahead of the 2026 World Cup on home soil.
