Filming for "Michael" sequel begins late 2026 or early 2027

Filming for the sequel to the biopic "Michael" is set to commence in late 2026 or early 2027, according to Lionsgate’s motion picture chief Adam Fogelson. The studio aims to release the follow-up film by the end of 2028. This announcement comes on the heels of the first film's groundbreaking success, which recently became the first biopic to surpass $1 billion at the global box office.

The original "Michael," which chronicles the life of pop icon Michael Jackson, features Jaafar Jackson, the late singer’s nephew, in the lead role. The film covers Jackson’s rise from the Jackson 5 to his iconic "Bad" world tour in the late 1980s. The sequel is expected to include several musical sequences that were shot during the production of the first film. Fogelson emphasized the studio's commitment to delivering a sequel that meets audience expectations while maintaining budgetary constraints.

There has been speculation that the sequel may address the controversial child sexual abuse allegations that surrounded Jackson, which were initially part of the screenplay for the first film. However, legal limitations related to a previous settlement have complicated this aspect. The Jackson estate is reportedly not allowed to mention one of the accusers due to a clause discovered during reshoots.

"Michael" debuted with the largest opening weekend for a biopic and has since surpassed "Oppenheimer" to become the highest-grossing film in its genre, grossing £1.001 billion (approximately $1.3 billion) worldwide.
