The Sand Creek Fire in southwestern Montana has expanded to 27,736 acres as of Thursday, threatening the Maverick Mountain Ski Area but sparing the ski lodge and nearby Elkhorn Hot Springs thanks to the efforts of firefighters. The blaze, which began earlier this month, has prompted significant firefighting resources to be deployed to contain its spread amid challenging weather conditions.
