Mount Etna eruption closes Sicily's Vincenzo Bellini Airport, stranding passengers

Mount Etna has erupted again, prompting the closure of Sicily's busiest airport, Vincenzo Bellini Airport in Catania. The airport announced on Friday that all flights will remain suspended until at least 2 PM local time on Saturday, due to significant ash fallout from the volcano. This marks one of the most considerable disruptions in over 20 years.

The eruption comes during a peak travel season, leading to widespread cancellations and delays. More than a third of the 1,974 flights scheduled between last Thursday and this Wednesday have been canceled, with an additional 600 flights diverted. Catania is situated just 30 kilometers (20 miles) south of Mount Etna, raising concerns about the viability of having a major airport in such proximity to an active volcano. Hundreds of passengers are currently stranded, with many reaching out to airlines for updates on their travel plans.

The airport typically serves over 40,000 passengers daily, and reports indicate that around 300 travelers were stuck on Thursday evening, awaiting alternative arrangements. Antonella Thirande Warnakulasuriya Costa, a passenger hoping to travel to Sri Lanka via Dubai, expressed frustration after her flight was canceled multiple times. The ash cloud's impact extends beyond Sicily, affecting air travel as far as North Africa.

In response to the flight disruptions, Trenitalia, the Italian train company, has added six extra trains on the Palermo-Messina-Catania route to help stranded travelers. While passengers may typically claim compensation for significant travel disruptions, volcanic eruptions are categorized as extraordinary circumstances, meaning airlines are not legally required to provide refunds or compensation. As the situation develops, many are left to navigate the uncertainty of their travel plans during this busy holiday period.
