North Korea launches ballistic missile amid US-South Korea military drills

North Korea launched a ballistic missile toward the Sea of Japan on Wednesday morning, marking its second missile test in less than a week. The missile was fired from the Wonsan area, according to reports from South Korea and Japan. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed the launch occurred around 6:00 AM local time and stated that the missile traveled over 700 kilometers (about 435 miles) before falling into the sea.

This missile test coincides with the upcoming annual Ulchi Freedom Shield military exercises planned by South Korea and the United States, set to begin on August 17. These exercises typically involve significant troop deployments and are designed to enhance military readiness. North Korea has historically reacted to such drills with missile launches and threats, viewing them as preparations for invasion. Lim Eul-chul, a North Korea expert at Kyungnam University, noted that Pyongyang is likely monitoring the drills closely and may respond with further provocations if it deems necessary.

In previous years, North Korea has condemned these joint military exercises, describing them as aggressive and provocative. The scale of this year's Ulchi Freedom Shield will be similar to previous years, involving approximately 18,000 South Korean soldiers. While Seoul and Washington maintain that the drills are defensive, North Korea's rhetoric has intensified, particularly against Japan. Recently, North Korean state media criticized Japan's defense policy as a “re-invasion-minded” approach, further escalating tensions in the region.

Additionally, North Korea's military activities have drawn international scrutiny beyond the Korean Peninsula. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently claimed that a North Korean ballistic missile was used in a Russian attack that killed workers in Ukraine. This connection raises concerns about North Korea's involvement in global conflicts and its potential alignment with Russia amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
