Denny Hamlin extended his NASCAR Cup Series points lead following the Iowa Corn 350 on Sunday, maintaining a 24-point advantage over second-place Chase Elliott after a late-race caution reshuffled the top 12 at Iowa Speedway.

This matters because the Cup Series playoffs are just weeks away, and every point gained now strengthens Hamlin’s grip on the regular-season championship. Iowa’s 350-mile race under the lights became a chess match in the final 50 laps as leaders gambled on track position before a caution flew on Lap 297, bunched the field and set up a green-white-checker finish that preserved Hamlin’s day. Elliott, who entered the race second in points, climbed to a season-high third-place finish but couldn’t close the gap, while playoff-bound Kyle Larson’s mid-pack run left him 117 points behind Hamlin—effectively ending his pursuit of the top seed.

Hamlin’s streak now stands at four straight top-10s, including wins at Atlanta and Pocono, while Elliott has struggled for consistency outside of superspeedway events. Crew chiefs admit Iowa’s 0.875-mile layout played to Hamlin’s strengths—his ability to manage tires and avoid big mistakes on a track that rewards precision over outright speed. The playoff picture remains fluid: Joey Logano sits third in points, 53 back, while Ross Chastain is fourth, 79 behind Hamlin. Playoff spots are still up for grabs, but Hamlin’s cushion means he can absorb a bad finish at Daytona next week without surrendering the No. 1 seed.

Next up is the Daytona night race, where superspeedway racing and pack drafting could flip the standings overnight. Hamlin’s team insists they’re focused on one week at a time, but the math is undeniable: a top-15 finish at Daytona would nearly lock in the regular-season title and the playoff pole position. For everyone else, the message is clear—points deficits are now nearly impossible to erase before the playoffs begin in September.
