Google Nest upgrades devices with Thread 1.4 support

Google is quietly rolling out a software update to its Nest smart home devices that makes pairing new gadgets easier.

The update adds support for Thread 1.4, a newer version of the wireless protocol that lets Nest Hubs, Nest Hub Gen 2, Nest Hub Max and Nest WiFi Pro connect to each other more smoothly. Thread acts as the wireless backbone for Matter, the standard that lets smart devices from different brands work together. Google hasn’t issued a formal announcement, but users on Reddit have started noticing the change in recent days.

Thread 1.4 brings a key improvement: standardized credential sharing. That means when you add a new light switch or sensor from a third-party brand, the Nest devices can now accept its security keys in the same way every time. The update also cuts response delays, reduces random dropouts and promises more reliable connections across the whole mesh network.

Smart home experts say the change is small but significant. Easier pairing means fewer failed setups and less fiddling in the Google Home app. It also hints that Google is quietly upgrading its older devices to keep them compatible with newer Matter-certified products. Homeowners with multiple Nest devices may see fewer disconnections and faster automations once the rollout reaches their area.
