Paramount releases Optimus Prime short September 17

A new 12-minute animated short, *Optimus Prime: Awakening*, will debut in theaters alongside a 40th-anniversary re-release of *The Transformers: The Movie*, starting September 17 and running through September 22.

The original 1986 film, a cult classic produced by Sunbow Productions and Marvel Productions, revolutionized animated movies with its dark tone, voice cast including Orson Welles and Eric Idle, and groundbreaking animation. Its return marks a rare chance for fans to see it on the big screen for the first time in decades. The short serves as a direct continuation, set after the events of the original film and before *Transformers: The Movie 2*, which was never made. It’s produced by Hasbro’s entertainment division and animated by New York-based Titmouse, known for work on *Robot Chicken* and *Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K.*

The revival comes after years of fan demand and nostalgia-driven interest in retro animation. Hasbro has been rereleasing classic Transformers content to fuel merchandise sales and streaming interest. The short bridges the gap between the original film’s cliffhanger ending and the canceled sequel, offering closure to longtime fans. Theater chains in North America, Europe, and Asia are participating, with some adding 4K restorations of the original film.

For the franchise, this is more than a nostalgia play. *Transformers* remains a billion-dollar brand, but its cinematic legacy has struggled since Michael Bay’s live-action films ended in 2017.
