Nicholas Hoult faces backlash for joining HBO's Harry Potter series

Nicholas Hoult has been cast as Gilderoy Lockhart in HBO's upcoming adaptation of the Harry Potter series, drawing backlash from fans due to author J.K. Rowling's controversial views on gender. The announcement was made this week, marking another step in the network's ambitious plan to create seven seasons, one for each of the original books. Rowling will serve as the executive producer for the series.

The criticism comes at a time when discussions around gender identity and rights are particularly prominent. Many fans are expressing disappointment on social media, accusing Hoult of supporting anti-LGBT+ sentiments by associating with the project. One user articulated their feelings by stating, "This is disappointing to see," while another remarked, "All of my goodwill towards him is fully gone." A fan account dedicated to Hoult even paused its posts, urging the actor to reconsider his participation in the series.

Hoult, 36, has yet to publicly respond to the backlash. His casting follows a long history with the franchise; he previously auditioned for various roles in the original films, including Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy. In a recent interview, he reflected on his unsuccessful attempts, noting, "I remember doing a couple of auditions" but ultimately not securing a part.

Other cast members have distanced themselves from Rowling's views. Bel Powley, who will portray Petunia Dursley, publicly stated she "strongly disagrees" with Rowling’s stance on gender and expressed her support for the trans community. John Lithgow, cast as Albus Dumbledore, even considered withdrawing from the project due to criticism but ultimately decided to stay, citing the series' themes of acceptance and compassion. As the production moves forward, it remains to be seen how Hoult will navigate the growing scrutiny and whether he will address the concerns raised by fans.
