Barack Obama blasted Donald Trump’s “cruelty and corruption” on Saturday as he campaigned for Democratic candidates in Ohio and Michigan, warning voters that the president’s foreign policy and domestic agenda have plunged the country into chaos. Speaking to a packed crowd in Cleveland, the former president called the U.S.–Israel‑Iran conflict “an unnecessary war nobody asked for” and urged Ohioans to reject the Republican administration in the upcoming midterms. He then traveled to Detroit, where he rallied behind Senate hopeful Abdul El‑Sayed and gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Benson.

Obama’s remarks come as the 2024 midterm elections approach, a pivotal moment for both parties after two years of Trump’s second term. The former president framed the November 3 vote as a “circuit breaker” that could curb what he described as “foolishness” and “grifting” from the White House. He highlighted the fallout from the war with Iran, saying the conflict has handed Tehran greater economic leverage by threatening oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. The criticism aligns with growing Democratic concerns over the president’s handling of foreign crises and his alleged use of public funds for personal gain.

During the Ohio rally, Obama also denounced a controversial attack ad run by Republican presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy against Democratic candidate Amy Acton. He said Ramaswamy “has no line he will not cross” and condemned the low standards of the campaign. Obama defended Acton, noting her painful childhood story of abuse, neglect and homelessness, and shared the stage with her and former Senator Sherrod Brown. Trump, meanwhile, defended the ad while casting an early ballot in Florida, underscoring the deep partisan divide ahead of the elections.

The former president’s sharp language signals a renewed effort by Democrats to mobilize swing voters in the Midwest. Obama’s presence may boost turnout for down‑ballot races and put pressure on Republican candidates to distance themselves from Trump’s rhetoric. With the war in the Middle East and domestic scandals still unfolding, the midterms could reshape the balance of power in Congress and set the tone for the 2024 presidential contest.
