AOC backs progressives amid Democratic Party split

The push reflects a widening split in the party between the progressive wing and the Biden-aligned establishment. Ocasio-Cortez’s comments come after a wave of primary challenges in 2022 and 2020, including her own upset victory over Rep. Joe Crowley in 2018. Recent examples include Rep. Cori Bush’s primary win in Missouri and Rep. Jamaal Bowman’s victory in New York, both backed by progressive groups like Justice Democrats and the Working Families Party.

Ocasio-Cortez framed the new generation of progressives as unafraid to confront corporate donors and party leadership. She criticized what she called “pay-to-play politics” and praised candidates who fund their campaigns through small donations instead. The conference, a gathering of progressive activists and digital organizers, has historically been a platform for grassroots movements to challenge centrist Democrats. This year, panels focused on strategies to mobilize young and working-class voters in key races.

The shift could reshape the Democratic Party’s direction ahead of 2024. Progressive groups are targeting seats in swing districts and states, aiming to pull the party left on issues like healthcare, climate, and labor rights. Ocasio-Cortez’s endorsement signals growing influence for the insurgent wing, even as party leaders try to maintain control.
