Gluck's 'One Night Only' draws 'Purge' comparisons

Director Will Gluck has acknowledged the comparisons between his new romantic comedy โ€œOne Night Onlyโ€ and the dystopian โ€œPurgeโ€ franchise, calling the parallels โ€œunderstandableโ€ as the film touches on themes of societal collapse and personal survival.

The 2013 โ€œPurgeโ€ series, created by James DeMonaco, imagined a future America where all crimeโ€”including murderโ€”is legal for one night each year. Since its release, the franchise has sparked real-world debates about social inequality, government control and public safety. Gluckโ€™s film, a lighter-hearted rom-com set against that same one-night premise, flips the script by focusing on two strangers bonding rather than fearing each other. The director told Deadline that while โ€œOne Night Onlyโ€ is meant to be a feel-good story about connection, the backdrop of a society unraveling is hard to ignoreโ€”and audiences are picking up on it.

The timing of the release adds to the conversation. With global instability risingโ€”from political polarization to economic uncertaintyโ€”films that explore societal fragility often resonate more deeply than their creators intend. Gluck said he wasnโ€™t trying to comment on real-world events but admitted the premise naturally invites reflection. โ€œItโ€™s a fun rom-com, but the world feels unstable right now,โ€ he said. โ€œPeople are drawn to stories where the rules are gone, even if just for one night.โ€

This isnโ€™t the first time a lighthearted film has been pulled into darker cultural discussions. Movies like โ€œDoomsdayโ€ and โ€œ28 Days Laterโ€ started as genre exercises but became touchstones for public anxiety. For โ€œOne Night Only,โ€ the comparison might actually help its box-office runโ€”especially among younger audiences who see dystopian themes everywhere from TikTok trends to political memes. The film opens in theaters this weekend, and Gluck hopes viewers will focus on the romance first. But whether they do or not, the โ€œPurgeโ€ parallels are already part of the conversation.
