The San Diego Padres , as long as A.J. Preller is in charge of team-building, can never be counted out of any kind of move.
He's got a knack for the blockbuster trade, and last season, he acquired superstar closer Mason Miller in a stunning move. This year might bring about another huge trade.
On the Just Baseball podcast , ESPN insider Buster Olney shared his prediction that the Padres would be the trade deadline winners, thanks to an "aggressive" plan, in the sweepstakes for 2.70 ERA ace of the Detroit Tigers , Tarik Skubal .
"I think San Diego ," Olney said. "What the Padres are communicating to other teams is, 'We're gonna be aggressive at the deadline.' They have new ownership this week, they've got money to spend."
The Padres being big spenders and adding Skubal this season in a trade would be very exciting. While the offense is a huge issue for the Padres, the team does lack a true ace.
For as good as Michael King is, and injured starters Joe Musgrove and Nick Pivetta have been, adding Skubal, the back-to-back Cy Young winner, is something that would be incredibly exciting.
Such a massive trade wouldn't be a surprise from Preller and the Padres, especially since it makes a ton of sense for San Diego to acquire Skubal this season.
