A growing number of companies are producing kid-friendly smartphones as parents express heightened concerns about the risks of unrestricted smartphone access for their children. These devices are designed to provide communication capabilities akin to regular smartphones while restricting access to potentially harmful content. The trend reflects an urgent need for safer technology as children increasingly engage with mobile devices.

Many of today's kid-specific phones come equipped with touchscreens, cameras, and calling features but have modified software that limits or removes access to web browsers, social media, and app stores. Parents can use companion apps to manage their children's phones, allowing them to approve contacts, monitor locations, set screen time limits, and receive alerts about cyberbullying or explicit content. This level of oversight aims to provide peace of mind for parents navigating the complex digital landscape.

The Bark Phone is one of the most recognized options on the market. Built on Samsung Galaxy hardware, it uses Barkโ€™s monitoring software to ensure safety. It allows only approved contacts for calls and texts and continuously scans communications for signs of cyberbullying or other dangers. The phone also features GPS tracking and screen-time management. The standard model is priced at $240, with a required monthly wireless plan starting at $29.

Other notable players include Gabb and Pinwheel. Gabb eliminates online risks by excluding social media and browsers, offering a curated selection of preloaded apps instead. Gabb phones start at $159.99, with service plans from $24.99 per month. Pinwheel allows parents to customize app access and create different modes for various times of day, such as restricting features during school hours. Pinwheel phones start at around $119. As these companies expand their offerings, they are shaping a new landscape for how children interact with technology, making it safer and more manageable for parents.
