Philippine sailors are still competing for sea jobs even after deadly attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz that killed international crew members. Al Jazeera’s Barnaby Lo spoke to seafarers in Manila who say they will keep working despite the risks.

The attacks, which began in early 2024, have targeted oil tankers and container vessels that cross the narrow waterway between Iran and Oman. At least 12 vessels have been struck, and dozens of crew have been injured or killed. The incidents come amid rising tensions between Iran and Israel and the United Nations’ calls for freedom of navigation. Shipping companies have raised insurance premiums and rerouted vessels, adding pressure on the global supply chain.

Philippine seafarers, who make up about 30 % of the world’s merchant navy, are drawn to overseas jobs for the high wages and steady employment. In Manila, 1,200 crew members interviewed by Lo said they would accept contracts even if the vessel’s route passes through the Hormuz. “We need to support our families,” one said. The Philippine Maritime Industry Authority has warned that the risk level is now “high” and urged companies to adopt stricter safety protocols, but many sailors say the financial incentives outweigh the danger.
