A plane carrying 20 tonnes of health supplies from the World Health Organization (WHO) has landed in Beirut, Lebanon, to aid patients injured in the devastating blast that struck the city on August 4. The shipment is set to provide critical support for 1,000 trauma and surgical interventions, addressing the urgent needs of those suffering from injuries and burns caused by the explosion.

This delivery comes at a time when Lebanon is grappling with multiple crises, including civil unrest, an ongoing economic downturn, and the COVID-19 pandemic. The recent blast exacerbated an already dire situation, leaving three hospitals in Beirut non-functional and causing partial damage to two others. With hospitals overwhelmed, injured patients are being transferred to facilities as far away as Saida in the south and Tripoli in the north, creating a significant strain on the countryโ€™s healthcare system.

Dr. Iman Shankiti, WHO Representative in Lebanon, emphasized the organization's commitment to providing life-saving care. โ€œOur hearts and prayers are with all those affected by this tragic event,โ€ she said, noting that WHO is working closely with national health authorities and hospitals to assess needs and ensure immediate support. The supplies will be distributed to priority hospitals treating the wounded, helping to fill the gaps created by the blast.

The humanitarian response is further supported by the United Nations and other partners, who are mobilizing resources to assist the Lebanese government during this crisis. Dr. Najat Rochdi, UN Resident Coordinator in Lebanon, highlighted the collaborative effort to provide immediate assistance, stating, โ€œWe are in this together, and we are committed to supporting Lebanon in this very difficult time.โ€ As the situation unfolds, ensuring the continuity of healthcare, particularly for the most vulnerable populations, remains a critical priority for both the WHO and the Ministry of Public Health.
