Manchester United’s summer rebuild is starting to take on a familiar shape, and perhaps a familiar influence too. As reported by The Northern Echo , United are set to enter the race for Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney, with Michael Carrick understood to be pushing the club towards a player he knows better than most.

Hackney, 23, appears increasingly likely to leave Middlesbrough after their play-off final defeat to Hull City. With just one year left on his contract at the Riverside, Boro are expected to cash in rather than risk losing one of their most valuable assets for a reduced fee later down the line.

Crystal Palace and Tottenham are already expected to make formal moves, while Everton have also been linked. Palace’s interest feels especially logical, given Adam Wharton ’s uncertain future at Selhurst Park. Yet Manchester United’s arrival in the conversation changes the temperature of the race.

This is where the story becomes more intriguing. Carrick did not merely observe Hackney from afar. He helped shape him. During his time as Middlesbrough manager, Carrick gave Hackney a regular starting role and repeatedly praised his development, composure and technical quality.

That relationship matters. Modern recruitment can often feel like a spreadsheet exercise, full of data points, profiles and value curves. Hackney, however, would arrive at Old Trafford with a human recommendation attached. Carrick knows his strengths, his character and his capacity to absorb pressure.

For Hackney, the appeal is obvious. Reuniting with a manager who trusted him at a formative stage of his career, while stepping into one of English football’s biggest arenas, would represent a significant leap. It would also offer United a midfielder still young enough to grow, rather than another expensive solution built for the short term.

Casemiro ’s departure has left United needing both legs and intelligence in midfield. Ederson is reportedly set to arrive from Atalanta, while Sandro Tonali has also been mentioned as a possible target. Hackney feels like a different kind of move, less headline grabbing, more developmental.

That does not make it less important. United have often suffered by chasing names before profiles. Hackney offers press resistance, tidy passing and positional discipline. He may not walk into the side as an instant star, but he could become the sort of squad piece successful teams quietly rely upon.
